Marketing Tips for Social Networking
15 Jan 2013 |
I
continually hear different attitudes towards social networking from both a
personal and business related perspective. There are people who like it, people
who don't, and those that just won't even consider it as a new form of
communication. From a business perspective there is no doubting that as a Gold Coast based business you need to be at least considering social networking now,
as soon it will become the most important marketing medium in your business.
Here
are just a few little hints, tips and some very interesting information that
will show how powerful this medium can be. I will focus on Facebook for this
article.
An
interesting example for the Gen Y and Z versus Gen X and baby boomers, and the
adoption of Facebook as a form of communication and information. 50% or less of
the people we know and deal with in the later category are using Facebook
versus almost 100% of the younger generations. A great example of the
proliferation based on generation is the support for the music and bands of
their respective times. Icehouse for example, one of Australia's greatest rock
bands with an international career and reputation has over 25,000
Facebook "Likes". Alternatively Justice Crew, who were launched to
fame in a recent reality TV show has over 800,000 "likes". This may
or may not surprise you, but what it tells me is that the future of marketing
to the Gen Y and Z generations truly lies in adopting and embracing social
networking. Imagine if your business or brand had immediate access to 800,000
of your fans or clients, where you can control the regularity and content of
communication with them? Just incredibly powerful.
For
those not surprised it confirms what the stats say about Facebook. According to statistics website socialbakers, there are
currently over 11 million registered Facebook accounts in Australia with almost
half of those users aged between 18-34. There are slightly more females than
males using Facebook but the margin is minimal.

So
how does a local gold coast business apply and implement Facebook and social
networking effectively?
In
terms of direct marketing using Facebook, you need to be very specific with
your approach. If its promoting directly to your "likes" then you
need to make it interesting and worthwhile. One of the best offers I have seen
recently was by the Ramada Hotel in Ballina in northern NSW. They offered a
promotion for their "likes" to share a promotion with their friends
to go in the draw to win accommodation. A fantastic way to target your
"likes" friends and a very clever way to market to a wide audience
for very little cost.

There
are also Facebook ads, which are another great way to directly target specific
segments. The key though is not directly selling through the ads, but to look
at Facebook ads as a way to get a whole new audience to like and follow your
business. Then you have the opportunity to engage them and consider the best
way to market and ultimately generate business, and the all important new
business.
There
is no doubting that Facebook and the other social networking mediums offer some
fantastic opportunities to cost effectively market your gold coast business and
they will only become more and more important as the younger generations become
consumers. Call or email us today if you would like more information about how
we can help your Gold Coast business implement an effective social networking
strategy.
